Everything you need to know about polygel nails
If you’ve been looking for the perfect combination of strength, flexibility, and long-lasting results, you may have come across polygel nails. Sometimes referred to as acrylgel, polymer gel, proform and even hard gel.
This innovative nail enhancement has quickly become a favorite among clients needing added durability, but you might still be wondering, what exactly are polygel nails, and how do they compare to other types of nail enhancements? Let’s break it all down.
What are polygel nails?
Polygel nails are a hybrid nail enhancement that combines the best qualities of both acrylics and gels. It’s a gel-based formula that’s much lighter and more flexible than traditional acrylic nails, but offers the same durability and long-lasting results. The unique consistency of polygel allows it to be easily shaped and molded, giving you a sculpted finish that looks and feels amazing.
Unlike traditional gel polish, which is simply applied over the natural nail, polygel is built up on the nail to create extensions or add a protective overlay to the natural nails.
Whether you want to add length, improve strength, or just enhance the look of your natural nails, polygel is an excellent choice.
What polygel nails are not
While polygel nails have a lot of benefits, there are a few misconceptions to clear up:
X – They are not a Press-On Nail. Polygel nails are not like the easy, temporary press-on nails you can buy at the pharmacy. They require professional application and curing under a UV or LED light.
X – They are not an acrylic alternative for everyone: While polygel offers a similar level of durability to acrylics, it’s not always the best choice for those who need extreme length or strength for everyday tasks. If you tend to work with heavy-duty materials or your nails are naturally very thin, acrylics may still be a better option for maximum strength.
X – they are not a one-size-fits-all solution: Every nail type is unique, and while polygel is versatile, it may not be ideal for everyone.
Who are polygel nails best for?
Polygel nails are perfect for a variety of clients:
Those with Brittle or Weak Nails: Polygel provides strength and flexibility without the heaviness of acrylic, making it a great choice for clients who need extra support for fragile nails.
Busy Professionals: If you don’t have time for constant touch-ups but still want durable, long-lasting nails, polygel is a fantastic option. The flexible material resists chipping, and its lighter weight makes it more comfortable.
Hairdressers: Polygel offers impressive strength, durability for someone whos in and out of water and chemicals all day.
What to expect during your appointment:
If you’re getting polygel nails for the first time, here’s what you can expect at your appointment:
- Consultation, Your nail technician will begin with a consultation to understand what look you’re aiming for. Whether you want added length, strength, or a simple polish, the technician will assess your natural nails and discuss your preferences.
- Nail Prep, Just like other nail enhancements, your nails will need to be prepped. This involves cleaning, trimming, shaping, and etching to ensure the best adhesion of the polygel.
- Polygel Application: The technician will carefully apply a thin layer basecoat then a layer of polygel to your nails, sculpting and shaping them as needed then cured under a UV or LED lamp to harden it.
- Shaping & Finishing: After curing, your nails will be shaped and filed to perfection. The final steps include applying a color (and art) of your choice with a matte or gloss finish.
- Massage & aftercare: While you enjoy a hand massage with deeply hydrating and nourishing buttercream, your technician will explain how to best take care of your nails until you return for either removal or an infill.
Aftercare tips:
To ensure your polygel nails last as long as possible and stay looking fresh, follow these essential care tips:
- Avoid Using Nails as Tools: Even though polygel nails are durable, avoid using them to open cans, scrape surfaces, or perform other tasks that could cause them to chip or break.
- Moisturize Regularly: Keep your nails and cuticles hydrated with a nourishing cuticle oil or hand cream. This will help prevent the nails from becoming brittle and keep your nails looking fresh.
- Be Gentle During Daily Tasks: While polygel nails are strong, they’re not invincible. Be mindful when doing activities like typing, washing dishes, or handling sharp objects. Wearing gloves when doing tasks that could cause damage to your nails is a great habit to adopt.
- Touch Up Your Cuticles: Pushing back your cuticles daily can help your polygel nails last longer by keeping the dead skin cells from under the cuticle… creeping under the product.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Try to avoid prolonged contact with strong cleaning products or chemicals that can weaken the nails. Wearing gloves while cleaning will help protect your polygel nails.
- Don’t Pick or Peel: This can cause damage to your natural nails
